HarperSmiles Interview - Erica F of Monroe, NY

“I think knowing that the pain we endured could have been prevented is hard to accept.  But knowing we have the ability to make sure other families don’t learn this lesson the same way we did, gives us purpose.”

How important is family to you?

Family is my number 1 priority.  My husband and I have pretty busy schedules so finding time to do something together as a family is really important to us.

The HarperSmiles community seems to have taken on a life of its own.  How does this community energize you?

We certainly feel blessed to have the community supporting us the way that we do.  The mission of our organization is to educate and spread awareness about home safety and hidden home dangers; but really, it’s so much more than that.  We suffered a tragedy and what we find most obvious and most painful is all the memories we won’t get to make with our daughter and the time we don’t get to have with out daughter in the future  Because of this, we hold onto the memories we do have and we cherish them, even though there aren’t enough. So, we want to make as many of our events and fundraisers family friendly events.  By doing this, we get to create opportunities for our community to help us spread awareness and to spend time together with our loved ones and create new memories.

What gave you the strength to turn a tragedy into dedicating your life to making the world a safer place for children?

I don’t know that anything we do comes from a place of strength.  I think knowing that the pain we endured could have been prevented is hard to accept.  But knowing we have the ability to make sure other families don’t learn this lesson the same way we did, gives us purpose.  And the purpose in turn gives us strength.

How does this event (event on 10/27) carry forward the mission of HarperSmiles?

Our event isn’t just to run a 5K, or to just raise money. It’s an event for the whole family to come enjoy on a fall evening together to create new memories.   At the same time, the money raised will directly support a program we are developing to help teach new parents about different hidden home safety hazards.  We are excited about this event and even more excited to see everyone there.
